Laying the foundation for Wellness

In some ways, one could say that chiropractic care is a bit like building a house - certain things have to happen in a particular order in order for everything to stand strong and work together correctly. When building a house, if you tried to build your walls before you had a solid foundation, your walls would be weak and eventually may even collapse. If you tried to build your roof before the walls were ready, you would run into the same problem. These concepts apply to your body as well, and chiropractic care addresses many common reasons why people experience pain and other health issues. If something is not right with your body's foundation, than that needs to be addressed before true health can be achieved. With chiropractic care, your body has to go through a particular plan of care in order to repair itself correctly and fully. There are three general phases of chiropractic care.

Phase 1: Relief Care

If you are in pain when you come into see Dr. Mattern his first objective is to help you reduce pain and start feeling better as soon as possible.  That's how he gets his name, "The Ouch Doctor" Most people don't wake up and think "Hey, I feel great, I think I'll call and see if I can get in to see some chiropractor today"!  It's human nature, people procrastinate and put taking care of themselves on the back burner.  But pain, is a good motivator-when things don't work or it really begins to put a crimp in their day then they finally begin to sit up and take notice.

So, depending on the severity of the underlying condition which is causing your pain or symptom, it is typical for a patient to need chiropractic care 2-3 times in a week.  This shouldn't last long and isn't always the case.  Within your first three encounters Dr. Mattern usually sees signs of improvement.  If not he is typically looking into additional diagnostics and reviewing your case to find out why.

2: Corrective/Restorative Care

During the corrective phase of chiropractic care, muscles and other tissues are allowed to heal more completely, which helps prevent further injury or pain. The goal of corrective or restorative chiropractic care is to help bring your body closer to your genetic capacity to express wellness.   This is where you will be moving or doing a home exercise or a different movement pattern to Streeeeeetch your physiologic comfort zone and increase your bodies ability to adapt to everyday ergonomic, postural and gravity stressors that tend to wear and tear on the human frame.

Phase 3: Wellness Care

Once your body has fully healed and you are no longer experiencing back pain or other pain symptoms, it's a wise option to come in for periodic chiropractic tune-ups to avoid further problems in the future.  True, someday, you will die, the idea is to express your God given capacity for wellness and vitality at whatever station in life you happen to be in.

So, in a sense its like this:    If you push and push a giant boulder and finally get it rolling, its much easier to give it a shove once in a while to maintain momentum.  You don't want it to come to a complete stop and have to grunt, sweat and swear to get it going again!.  It's the same way with your health.  A push occasionally in the right direction catches little problems and helps "re-set" your nervous system so you can be at your best.  A periodic tweak, helps defragment your hard drive and keep you nimble and adaptive to the stress of your day.

Testimonial I've suffered from migraines my entire life. As I've gotten older they have increased in frequency to about 3 times a week. No pain killers, either over- the-counter or prescribed have ever been able to take away one of my migraines in the same day. But if I visit Dr. Mattern, and he adjust me, my headaches are usually gone within a few hours and they stay gone for quite awhile. Unbelieveable! I would recommend at least trying chiropractic care if you suffer from migraines too.
